Woodbury House is a well-respected art studio in the heart of Soho, London (UK) that specialises in unusual collections of artworks from emerging and established artists. Over the years, Woodbury House has built itself a reputation as the go-to destination for artwork by legendary street artist Richard Hambleton, a contemporary and friend of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Andy Warhol. Hambleton was best known for the arresting and ephemeral Shadowman wall paintings that popped up all over New York in the 1980’s, and later throughout Europe.
Coined ‘The Godfather of street art’ by the New York Times, Hambleton is regarded a legend of the street art world as many artists have used his artwork as inspiration, most notably Banksy who is passionate about disclosing where he derives his artistic inspiration from. With investors and collectors worldwide now stockpiling Hambleton’s work - it’s tipped to rise in value much as the work of his contemporaries has.
Woodbury House presents ‘Nightlife’ at STARTnet 2020, an exhibition of paintings by Richard Hambleton and photographs by Franc Palaia. The show brings together rare works on paper by Hambleton and images by Franc Palaia, who documented the artist’s ephemeral work in situ, through the 1980s.
Richard Hambleton was an American-Canadian graffiti artist best known for his recurring motif of a black-silhouetted figure known as the Shadowman. Along with his contemporaries Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Hambleton painted directly on the streets of New York and achieved success during the art boom of the 1980s. Today, Hambleton’s works are held in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others.
